What is a BDO and BDO Full Form

There is a total of 28 states in India. There are districts in every state and there are tehsils in those districts and there are many blocks in those tehsils. It is the job of a BDO officer to implement the public welfare schemes run by the government for a block and to oversee the development works related to the block.

  • BDO Full Form – Block Development Officer

The government keeps on bringing many types of government schemes for the development of the country. The purpose of these schemes is to help the development of the country and improve the standard of living of the people. The job of a BDO officer is to reach the information of all such schemes to the people and implement them.

It is also the job of the Block Development Officer to get the development works done by the government done properly. For example, if the sarpanch of a village has to build a street, then the BDO officer has an important role in monitoring the money from passing to its construction.

Qualification to Become a BDO OFFICER

To become a BDO officer, you have to appear for the examination conducted by PCS (Public Service Commission). What should be the eligibility to appear in this exam, you can see below.

  • Education Qualification – If you want to become a BDO officer then you have to be a graduate first. For which you have to complete 12th first. You can do 12th from any subject. For this, you have to do your graduation (BA, BSc, or BCom). After graduation, you will be eligible to appear in Public Service Commission exam.
  • Age Limit – To become a Block Development Officer, your age should be between 21 years (Minimum age) to 40 years (Maximum age). However, there is an age relaxation of 3 years for OBC category candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.
  • It is not mandatory for you to be a citizen of that state to give the PSC exam for any one state. Even if you are a permanent citizen of Haryana, you can give the PSC exam of Uttar Pradesh.

How to Become a BDO

According to the eligibility to become a BDO officer mentioned above, if you are eligible then you have to apply for the examination conducted by Public Service Center to become a BDO. Public Service Center (PSC) differs from state to state. This BDO exam for Uttar Pradesh is conducted by Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC), Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) in Rajasthan, and Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) in Bihar.

In whichever state you are residing, first, you have to apply for the examination by visiting the Public Service Center website of that state. This exam is conducted in 3 stages. Preliminary Examination, Main Exam, and Interview. Which you can see in detail below.

1. PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION

To become a BDO, first of all, you have to give the Preliminary Examination. There are 2 papers in this exam. General Studies 1 and General Studies 2. The first General Studies is of 200 marks in which there are 150 questions. General Studies 2 is also of 200 marks in which there are 100 questions.

All the questions in the preliminary exam are objective type. Only after passing both the papers to be held in this exam, you will be eligible to take the next exam.

2. MAIN EXAM

The candidates who pass the Preliminary Examination can appear in the Main Examination. You must have good preparation to clear this Main Exam. There is a total of 8 papers in this exam. All the papers are of 300-300 numbers, this is 8 papers –

  1. General Hindi
  2. Essay
  3. General Studies 1
  4. General Studies 2
  5. General Studies 3
  6. General Studies 4
  7. Optional Subject – Paper 1
  8. Optional Subject – Paper 1

General Hindi paper consists of 50 marks questions, all questions are asked in Hindi. In Essay writing, you will be given 3 topics, out of which you have to choose a topic and write an essay on it, for which you will get 3 hours and you will have to write this Essay in 700 marks.

There will be 4 papers of General Studies, all of which are of 200 marks. General Studies 1, 2, and 3 have questions related to economics, world geography, Indian history, and current affairs. Questions related to ethics are asked in the General Studies 4th paper.

Optional Subject Paper 1, 2 consists of questions based on 29 subjects. You have to choose any one subject out of 29 subjects. All the questions will be based on the same topic.

3. INTERVIEW

After clearing both the first examinations of Public Service Center candidates are shortlisted for interview. Many types of questions are asked in the interview, all these questions are of 200 marks. Numbers are given based on the candidate’s answers. A merit list is prepared by the PSC after the interview. Based on which the Block Development Officer is appointed.

How much is the BDO Officer Salary

The more responsibilities the BDO officer has, the more power he gets from the government. Along with power, they also get a good salary from the government. The salary of a BDO officer can be different for every state. The Public Service Center of the state determines the salary of the BDO. The monthly salary of a BDO can range from Rs.9000 to Rs.35000. The monthly salary also increases with the duration of the job. Along with a good salary, the Block Development Officer also gets many other services.
